The team at ESCO Consultants shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ESCO Consultants, but do you know our team?

What does your day-to-day look like at ESCO ?

“My day at ESCO involves managing projects in my pipeline, supporting my team and clients worldwide, and preparing materials for potential opportunities. I stay informed about upcoming projects, connect with industry peers and decision-makers, and ensure ESCO is well-positioned to win new work.

I also advise prospective clients on optimising their operations to maximise value, often leading to opportunities to provide operational support throughout the lifecycle of their assets”

What inspired you to join your industry?

From as early as I can remember, I aspired to be an engineer, imagining myself crafting solutions to tackle the world’s major challenges. Over time, I realised progress in the real world often comes in small, incremental steps rather than ground-breaking leaps. This shift in perspective taught me to appreciate the process of making ideas tangible, even if imperfect.

Success is about making things work, solving implementation challenges, and embracing the journey. This realisation and satisfaction inspired me to join this industry and continues to fuel my passion today.

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

ESCO is serving as the marine warranty surveyor for the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) project, overseeing the installation of a high-voltage DC (HVDC) line beneath the Hudson River to transport power from Canada to New York. My role involves monitoring the pull-in of the HVDC line from the seafloor onto land, ensuring it meets design parameters and addressing operational challenges.

The project’s complexity goes beyond engineering, scheduling was adjusted to protect a nearby bald eagle nesting site, and operations were carried out in sub-zero temperatures. What makes a project like this exciting is that solutions must be crafted around real environmental and operational constraints. Despite the challenges thrown our way, we developed ingenious solutions to make the project a success.

What do you think the future of energy and oceans looks like in the USA ?

The energy and oceans sectors in the USA are on a growth trajectory, driven by rising consumer demand and government initiatives promoting industrial development. While tariffs and other microeconomic shifts may create short-term disruptions, the outlook for US ports remains positive, with projected growth of around 2%, according to Moody’s ratings.

In high-density states, there’s a growing push to shift goods transport from roads to rivers, utilising waterways as highways. This creates opportunities for ESCO to collaborate with port operators on developing efficient, future-ready facilities. Despite political noise, US infrastructure projects are often shaped by practical regulations. For example, while national policies may waver, FEMA guidelines still require climate change considerations for new structures, ensuring data-driven decisions prevail where it matters most.

What do you enjoy most so far about working as part of the ESCO Consultants team in Houston?

The Houston office feels like a family, and the camaraderie here makes work even more enjoyable. We celebrate the little moments, like Auntrell’s daughter exploring classic film photography, Nicholas sharing stories of his family’s trip to witness a Tesla booster landing, or Ivan’s tales of near hole-in-ones on the golf course. There’s always something to laugh about, whether it’s reminiscing with David Ballads about solving problems from decades ago or simply catching up on life.

It’s a team that’s deeply connected, both personally and professionally, making every day rewarding and fun.

What can we expect from the ports and terminals market in the USA this year?

2025 looks promising for the ports and terminals market, with increased government spending in energy and infrastructure creating new opportunities. While some renewable energy projects may face delays, deregulation could encourage private investment and innovation in the sector. A key focus will be on advancing already funded projects that face challenges like resource competition, particularly for skilled engineering contractors. As technical partners, ESCO will play a vital role in helping stakeholders develop effective solutions to bring these projects to completion.

We also anticipate the growing role of AI in infrastructure, potentially driving efficiency in areas like data center placement in natural cooling environments such as oceans or streams. ESCO is actively engaging with government and industry partners to collaborate on these forward-thinking initiatives.

With strong potential for growth, ESCO is well-positioned to expand its presence in the ports and terminals sector, taking on exciting development projects across the United States.

Luis Gonzales, US Country Manager for Asset Integrity Management

In today’s competitive environment, when developing a new facility or greenfield project, it is crucial to define all Asset Integrity Management (AIM) strategies in advance, starting at the design and construction phases. This proactive approach ensures that you can operate and maintain your facilities properly and efficiently from the start-up day, guaranteeing operational efficiency and effective risk management throughout the asset’s lifecycle.

ESCO’s US Country Manager for Asset Integrity Management, Luis Gonzales, has reflected on his extensive experience in the energy sector and delved into key strategies and methodologies essential for preparing new facilities to achieve long-term success, operational efficiency, and sustainable performance.

The challenge with managing assets in Greenfield projects

Implementing an Asset Management Readiness program during the design and construction phases of new facilities or greenfield projects is crucial to overcoming challenges in the operations and maintenance phase. Key areas include:

Without predefined strategies, new facilities risk unplanned downtime, reduced asset lifespan, and safety hazards. Developing preventive and predictive maintenance plans early, while including integrity management, process safety, and compliance measures, ensures maintenance activities are seamlessly aligned with operations, safeguarding both performance and safety.

Identifying and addressing potential hazards in untested facilities is vital. Using FMECA (Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis) early allows systematic evaluation of failure modes, prioritisation of mitigation efforts, and the creation of a detailed risk register to enhance preparedness.

A Master Data Management (MDM) framework ensures critical asset information—such as equipment specifications and maintenance history—is accurate and accessible. Selecting the right Asset Information Management software early aligns data with operational needs. Stakeholder involvement in configuring and testing ensures successful implementation.

Effective allocation of personnel, materials, and finances is essential for operational efficiency. Careful planning ensures resources align with asset management goals.

Adhering to evolving regulations is mandatory to ensure safety and avoid legal penalties. Processes for monitoring compliance are essential.

By addressing these challenges through an Asset Management Readiness program, incorporating MDM frameworks and tailored AIM software—organisations can ensure long-term operational success and sustainability in Greenfield projects.

How to set new facilities up for success

Setting up a new facility is a significant undertaking that requires detailed planning, especially when it comes to Asset Integrity Management. Here is how you can provide a solid foundation for long-term success in your new facility:

Challenge: New facilities often start with little to no formalised asset register, which is crucial for tracking and managing equipment over time. Without a structured asset register, essential equipment may be overlooked and unprioritised, leading to inefficiencies and increased risk.

Benefits: Establishing a comprehensive asset register and defining equipment criticality helps make sure each piece of equipment is accounted for, prioritised, and documented based on its importance to operations and the business.

A thorough asset register provides visibility and enables targeted maintenance efforts, improving reliability, integrity, and reducing the likelihood of unexpected failures. By focusing resources on critical equipment, organisations can ensure smoother and more efficient operations from the outset.

Reliability-centred risk management

Challenge: Implementing an effective risk management strategy in new facilities is challenging due to the difficulty in identifying potential failure modes and their consequences. Without a structured approach, organisations may overlook critical hazards, leading to costly breakdowns, increased downtime, and safety incidents.

Benefits: Employing methodologies like Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) during the design and construction phases enables a thorough assessment of potential failure modes. This process helps evaluate the likelihood and impact of each failure, facilitating the development of targeted mitigation actions or tasks to be integrated into AIM strategies.

A reliability-centred approach to risk management allows organisations to proactively identify and address issues before they escalate, thereby protecting assets, personnel, and the environment. This strategy reduces downtime, enhances safety, and establishes a robust operational foundation for the facility’s lifecycle.

Challenge: New facilities require integrated asset management plans encompassing operations, maintenance, integrity management, and process safety to achieve production targets safely and consistently. Without a well-defined strategy, unplanned outages, inefficiencies, and safety incidents can occur due to inadequate preparation.

Benefits: Developing customised asset management strategies involves:

  • Operations: Establishing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and training programs to ensure efficient and safe facility operations.
  • Maintenance: Creating preventive and predictive maintenance plans, supported by a comprehensive Bill of Materials (BoM) that includes necessary spare parts.
  • Integrity Management: Implementing systems to monitor and maintain the structural and functional integrity of assets throughout their lifecycle.
  • Process Safety: Identifying potential hazards and implementing controls to prevent incidents, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

An optimised asset management strategy enhances operational reliability, extends equipment lifespan, and improves safety performance. By having critical spare parts readily available and well-trained personnel, facilities can respond promptly to maintenance needs and ensure smooth operations. Additionally, robust integrity management and process safety measures protect assets, personnel, and the environment, contributing to sustainable and efficient facility performance.

Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Training

Challenge: In new facilities, operational staff are often unfamiliar with the specific systems and processes in place. Without structured training, staff may be unprepared to manage equipment, leading to inefficiencies and increased risk.

Benefits: Providing in-depth O&M training materials tailored to the facility’s unique requirements equips staff with the knowledge and skills needed to manage assets effectively and safely.

Competent staff are more capable of operating and maintaining equipment, reducing the likelihood of user errors, improving efficiency, and most importantly supporting a culture of safety. This foundation of knowledge contributes to smoother, more effective facility operations.

Challenge: Selecting and implementing a comprehensive Asset Information Management system—such as a Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS), Enterprise Asset Management (EAM), Asset Performance Management (APM), Asset Investment Planning (AIP), or Integrity Management System (IMS)—is critical for efficient operations.

New facilities often face the challenge of choosing the right system without prior operational insights, which can lead to integration issues.

Benefits: A structured approach to system selection and implementation ensures that the chosen solution aligns with the facility’s goals, supports future growth, and integrates well with other operational systems. Involving key stakeholders, such as the document control team, in the system’s configuration design, testing, and rollout is essential for successful implementation.

A carefully selected and implemented Asset Information Management system simplifies data management, maintenance scheduling, benchmarking, analysis, and performance monitoring. The right system enables data-driven decision-making, automates processes, and provides a foundation for scaling operations efficiently as the facility grows.

The outcome: full visibility and optimised Operations and Maintenance processes

By implementing the strategies above, you can obtain complete visibility over your equipment and operations, allowing you to operate and maintain assets at optimal levels, assuring performance and monitoring and managing risk.

From minimising downtime to effectively managing risks, having a well-defined asset management strategy is essential for achieving operational excellence.

By investing in each of these AIM readiness services, new facilities are well-prepared to handle operational demands from day one, setting you up for long-term success, sustainability, and resilience in any new-build facility.

The team at ESCO Consultants shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ESCO Consultants, but do you know our team?

What does your day look like at ESCO?

Being a surveyor requires flexibility, which includes attending to existing cases and new cases. When I am not out on survey, I prefer to get to the office pretty early, when it’s a bit quieter. I attend to client emails, whilst monitoring active cases and on occasion I handle towage and voyage approvals. Day-to-day in the office, I will also be arranging surveys required for the day or week ahead.

What inspired you to join your industry?

“I started as a deck cadet in 2003, in offshore diamond drilling operations, working in my home country of Namibia. Since that time, I have always been inspired by Mariners who have dedicated their lives at sea and come ashore to drive and enhance the marine industry. In terms of surveying, I purposely transitioned into it from sea, as I believe that seagoing experience and technical knowledge assists in creating transparency and a 3rd party oversight over ships and marine assets for the Underwriters and Owners.

I just love the ocean and ships and believe their effects globally are at times underestimated.”

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

I have recently transitioned from the Maritime department to the Offshore department, for marine warranty survey (MWS) exposure, where I look forward to playing an integral part in executing rig moves and various MWS related tasks. I have also recently attended surveys of dredgers that are engaged in gas pipeline deployment from sea to ashore in Afungi, Mozambique. I am enthusiastic about this ongoing project, which will require continued involvement, and I can’t wait to see how it unfolds.

With Africa’s initiatives to enhance trade and sustainability in its maritime sector, Can you tell us what you think the future of energy and oceans looks like in your home country of Namibia?

The recent oil discovery in my home country reflects a potentially bright energy future for the country, with suggestions even of Namibia being the next Guyana for oil. Green hydrogen has gained momentum as a new renewable energy, and considering the abundance of heat and wind, Namibia can be considered as well positioned for renewable energy development. Furthermore, there are plan for the local port authority to expand its infrastructure to align with the future oil and gas demands, creating more new opportunity in energy and oceans locally.

Though my work is with ESCO’s operations in the UAE, I am very excited to see our operations and team in South Africa diversifying its support to the Namibian energy sector. With collaboration as one of our core values across ESCO Consultants, I hope and look forward to the opportunity to also contribute as ESCO and our sister company, the renewable energy consultants, JMC, further develop their footprint in Namibia.

What do you enjoy most about working as part of the ESCO Consultants team in Dubai?

The team is very diverse and professional in all areas and the vast amount of experience makes work a lot of fun and easier in a way. I find the social gatherings during tea /lunch breaks, interesting in that colleagues get to discuss global topics and those that are not work related, allowing one to take their mind off work.

The team at ESCO Consultants shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ESCO Consultants, but do you know our team?

What does your day-to-day look like at ESCO?

“My day often starts with a catch up of emails from colleagues in different time zones. Response priority is given to Asia and Middle East to ensure they get a return from me before they sign off. I can then focus on my ongoing jobs which are generally either marine casualty or engineering consultancy. Casualty work often consists of FFO (fixed & floating object) post loss. As a Civil Engineer, I often focus on jobs within my area of expertise, which mainly include port infrastructure such as quay walls, fendering equipment, mooring equipment, breakwaters and terminal buildings.

On the other hand, consultancy jobs are more design focused, and often consist of Port feasibility studies, and Port technical due diligence (TDD) studies and generally require inputs from various entities and teams across the Group. I get involved in the design of berthing, mooring and wave protection structures, focusing on their structural design. I also conduct mooring analyses, where outputs become a critical input for the concept design of Ports.

I regularly attend Ports across the UK for marine casualties where I undertake joint surveys of alleged damages, often between a vessel and port infrastructure. These attendances are often at short notice, and remaining available and responding quickly is key for our clients.”

What inspired you to join your industry?

“Since university, where both my dissertations were related to offshore renewables (floating solar & offshore wind foundations), I developed a keen interest in marine infrastructure. As a civil engineer, I realised that there was a big gap in existing port infrastructure for these ever-growing offshore wind turbines, and thought I’d like to work in this sector. Safe sector in the long term, as port design and maintenance is unlikely to ever see a trough during my career. As I started working, I then realised that the size of ships was also becoming a leading factor in the extension and development of ports. I generally enjoy the variability of the work I do, where loading conditions and boundary conditions always differ from a port to port and region to region.  I naturally ended up specialising in port infrastructure rather than renewables, and I understood that it isn’t possible to work in everything!

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

“I am just back from North Africa, where I am working on a marine casualty case which has now grown to be a very large claim. This involves extensive damages to a quayside in a major port. What I enjoy the most in the job is investigating the incident, the damages incurred by it, and separating the pre-existing damages from previous incidents or wear and tear.

We then make sure that repairs agreed by the Port are adequate and represent a like for like replacement, using a cost-efficient method. These are interesting investigations that require the review of various sets of data requiring different skill sets including master mariners, naval architects and of course, civil engineers.”

What does the future look like in energy and oceans in the UK ?

“I think that future in renewables is bright, despite recent market adjustments. There are challenges in the supply chain and upfront costs are high, but as we develop and continue to enhance the technology, I would expect both of these to start reducing, leading to a more cost-efficient market. I am no expert in renewables, but I hope and believe that it’s efficiency and capacity will continue to increase.”

What do you enjoy most about working as part of the ESCO Consultants team in London?

“Getting to stretch my legs every 15mn or so to open to entrance door of the office 😊 More seriously, I enjoy the social aspect of the office, with a large proportion of junior staff, often keen for a social drink after work. The view is obviously a big plus, which makes the office space that more enjoyable.”

The team at ESCO Consultants shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ESCO Consultants, but do you know our team?

On this week’s blog we feature Morwenna Vye, Country Lead for ESCO New Zealand

Tell us a bit about yourself and your career so far

“I’ve had a diverse and exciting career in the maritime and leisure industries. It started with driving superyachts based in Monaco, which gave me a first hand perspective of the high-end luxury marine sector. I’ve also managed a Flow Rider water park, worked as a yacht broker, and spent time as a semi-professional sailor.

Later, I transitioned into shipyard management, where I honed my operational and project management skills, and subsequently into roles as a marine investigator and ISM auditor, focusing on compliance and safety. Each step has deepened my understanding of the industry and allowed me to develop a truly global perspective on maritime operations.”

What inspired you to join the industry?

Growing up in Auckland, famously known as the “City of Sails,” I was surrounded by the ocean and a vibrant maritime community. The Americas Cup races held here were a huge inspiration and gave me my first exposure to the industry. My first job was helping with the event, and I’ve been hooked on the maritime world ever since.

Why the move to New Zealand for ESCO, and what are the plans ahead?

ESCO has an outstanding global reputation, and bringing its expertise to New Zealand feels like a natural fit. New Zealand is a maritime nation, with thriving ports, extensive shipping activity, and a significant yachting culture. Establishing the ESCO office here allows us to provide local expertise with global backing, focusing on marine consultancy services such as casualty investigation, risk assessment, ports and harbours support, and energy transition projects. Our plan is to build strong relationships within the industry and become a trusted partner for clients seeking innovative and reliable solutions in maritime and energy.

What do you think the future of energy and oceans looks like in New Zealand?

“It’s an exciting time. There’s enormous potential for innovation and growth as New Zealand embraces renewable energy and sustainability within its marine industries.

From offshore wind and tidal energy to sustainable port operations, there’s scope for transformative projects. ESCO is positioned to play a key role in supporting these initiatives with our technical expertise and global experience.”

Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing?

I’m happiest when I’m on or near the water—whether it’s surfing, sailing, or enjoying water sports with my kids. I’m also a two-time European Women’s Flowriding Champion, a journey that allowed me to compete internationally and experience incredible places around the world. Spending time at the beach with my family remains my favourite way to relax and recharge🏖

What makes maritime an exciting and rewarding career choice for women?

Maritime offers incredible opportunities for women, and I’m passionate about promoting diversity within the industry. While it has traditionally been male-dominated, the tide is changing, and I’m proud to be part of this shift as a board member for WISTA NZ (Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association). Through this role, I advocate for greater inclusion and aim to inspire other women to see the maritime sector as a place where they can thrive and make a significant impact.

We are excited to announce that ESCO has launched operations in New Zealand! ESCO New Zealand offers the company’s full range of energy and marine consultancy services, with a particular focus on bringing ESCO’s more than 150 years of legacy in marine surveying and consulting to support the country’s maritime industries. In October, 2024, ESCO Greece hosted a seminar in Piraeus on the topic ‘’South America Shipping: Current challenges and case studies’’. Addressing the key maritime hub of Piraeus, ESCO’s key regional experts shared their insights on key areas of importance for the shipping market’s of Panama and Brazil. The event highlighted emerging risks and regulatory complexities and ESCO’s local insights onto how to overcome them.

The ESCO Speakers

  • Maria Dragoumerli, Country Manager, ESCO Greece
  • Wagner Rodrigues, Regional Director, ESCO South America
  • Jose Alberto Rosas Rodriguez, Country Lead, ESCO Panama
  • Fabio Borda, Naval Architect and Marine and Ocean Engineer, ESCO Brazil

Navigational Risks for Vessels Transiting the Panama Canal

José Alberto Rosas underscored the operational risks for vessels navigating in the Panama Canal waters and made an introduction about the changes and trends since the Panama Canal expansion. Main contributive factors are mostly related to human factors while most common events are collisions and allisions. In 2016 the Panama Canal transit capacity increased in both the number of transits and the maximum size of the vessels, which has increased the cargo volumes transiting through the Panama Canal by around 50% in comparison to 2016 and has attracted new cargo segments such as LNG vessels.

Although there has been a slight increase in the frequency of accidents in the Panama Canal transits in recent years as a consequence of operational changes of the expansions, accident rated remail lower than other similar routes worldwide. However, it should be noted that many accidents in the Canal waters occurred during the waiting times of vessels prior to transit or while performing other operations at the anchorages. It’s worth mentioning that there are no official public statistics about these types of incidents.

The introduction of disruption charges for vessels presenting deficiencies during the Panama Canal transit or while navigating Panama Canal waters, may range between USD15,000-250,000 depending on the type and severity of the deficiency was pointed out as a factor to be considered by vessel operators, considering the economical and legal consequences of these cases.

Finally, environmental and climate change risks were addressed, based on the recent experience in the Panama Canal transit capacity after the severe drought in 2023 and 2024. Although it was mentioned that the water levels in the Gatun Lake were recovered in the last months and the Panama Canal Authority has already identified projects for a long-term solution, these are not expected to be fully operational at least until 2030 and therefore it is possible to suffer similar drought impacts due to severe climate events in the coming years.

South America’s Maritime Landscape: Diverse Risks and Regulatory Complexities

Wagner Rodriguez and Fabio Borda presented an overview of South America’s shipping industry, emphasising Brazil’s critical role. Key highlights included Brazil’s extensive maritime activity-bulk exports (iron ore, grains), crude oil via DP shuttle tankers, offshore shipping and inland river convoys.

They explored Brazil’s complex regulatory framework, blending Navy oversight with environmental and oil agency input, requiring local expertise. Challenges such as the Amazon River hazards (groundings, collisions), weather delays at ports and offshore complexities with subsea installations were discussed.

The seminar also noted Brazil’s repair facilities up to Panamax-size vessels, though larger ships face infrastructure limits. Success in this market hinges on strategic planning, risk management and a strong understanding of local practices.

Additionally, Brazil’s offshore oil fields introduce unique challenges, including subsea installations and tugboat operations under challenging conditions. Regulatory oversight involves multiple agencies, requiring operators to maintain transparent and adaptive relationships with local authorities.

Local Partner Global Expert

The seminar concluded with case studies and practical insights on risk reduction through compliance operational strategies and leveraging ESCO’s global expertise and local knowledge, reaffirming our commitment to remain the industry’s trusted partner.
