Brazilian packaging products manufacturer Engepack has contracted ESCO’s asset integrity management unit to conduct an operational excellence audit of the asset management systems in its plant at Simões Filho, Brazil.

Engepack is a pioneer in the manufacturing of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) packaging in Brazil. It has the largest and most modern PET preform factory in Brazil which provides packaging solutions to its customers in the food and beverage industries – soft drinks, water, juices, teas, dairy products, edible oils, mayonnaise, etc. – and household products.

The purpose of ESCO’s operational excellence audit is to assure that the plant is operating safely, and to its maximum design capacity, building a roadmap to address potential issues, and improving the efficiency of their asset, people and operations. Further, ESCO will also identify areas that pose a significant business risk and identify mitigation actions, plus assure return on investment (ROI) by focusing budget on fixing high priority opportunity initiatives.

ESCO’s approach includes an initial asset health check tool / operational excellence audit, followed by a software-based analysis to validate the issues and a diagnostics phase including an engineering analysis summary. Finally, the project will deliver a sequence of steps with a list of prioritised improvements based on projected ROI vs effort.

ESCO’s office in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will head up the project, with support from the company’s global asset integrity management team, who have delivered business performance improvement and operational excellence programs globally for the last two decades.

Peter Adam

“We are thrilled to partner with Engepack on this innovative project, and we look forward to leveraging our global AIM expertise and local Brazilian market knowledge to drive operational excellence and improve efficiency for the plant, which in turn will allow Engepack to deliver an even more efficient service to its customers,”

says Peter Adam, Group Managing Director for Asset Integrity Management.

Energy and marine consultancy ESCO has been awarded a contract to provide a shipping study to identify and assess navigational risks associated with the Korsnäs offshore wind farm – Finland’s first open-sea offshore wind power project.

The Korsnäs offshore wind farm is located on the west coast of Finland, in the Baltic Sea. The wind farm is a joint project between Vattenfall and Metsähallitus. It has a planned maximum capacity of 2.5 GW and an annual production of 7 TWh – enough capacity to power 350,000 electrically-heated detached houses by renewable energy.

ESCO’s scope of work includes a comprehensive navigational risk assessment, including quantitative risk modelling, stakeholder engagement and recommendations for risk mitigation measures. The findings will also include consideration of the risk effects of sea ice in the vicinity of the development site during the winter season.

The contract has been awarded to ESCO’s operations based in Hamburg, Germany, and will be carried out by the company’s global Ports and Harbours consultancy team, with specialist support from sister company JMC.

“We are pleased to provide our expertise in navigational risk analysis to support this pivotal step in Finland’s renewable energy development. This follows many years of successful collaboration by our team on similar work for Germany’s Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency – BSH – to assess shipping risks from offshore wind sites across the North Sea. This project win is therefore, a testament to our established technical reputation in this field.”

19 December 2024 – Energy and marine consultancy ESCO has entered into a knowledge transfer partnership with the University of Strathclyde and the University of Plymouth to develop a decision-making software to facilitate informed decarbonisation strategies for the maritime industry, including vessels and ports, in the context of evolving policy and technological uncertainties.

The software will offer vital support to decision-makers responsible for creating decarbonisation roadmaps, pathways, or making decarbonisation investments. This includes shipowners, charterers, cargo owners, ship and port managers, as well as policymakers and advisors. Financial institutions and insurers will also benefit from the software, as it helps them navigate the complexities of decarbonisation policies and related decisions.

Stefano Scarpa

”Such a tool does not exist in the wider maritime industry today. Maritime stakeholders therefore risk taking suboptimal decarbonisation decisions where they utilise information that can only look a year or two ahead as basis for investments that have a 20-30 year horizon. We will apply our expertise within maritime operations, vessels and ports design, energy and emission modelling to develop the new software. This will enable us to provide advanced predictive analysis and simulations, assisting our clients to navigate the complexities and uncertain conditions of their decarbonisation strategy.”

Stefano Scarpa, Associate Director for Maritime Decarbonisation & Global Emissions Consulting Lead

The project is co-founded by Innovate UK and will have a duration of 24 months. It will engage software engineering capabilities that will be co-located with ESCO’s maritime decarbonisation team in London, UK, and draw upon expertise from academics from the University of Strathclyde and the University of Plymouth.

ESCO has supported maritime decarbonisation projects with solutions for renewable energy production, energy storage and cold-ironing, alternative fuels and electrification, climate change adaptation, emission audit, assessment and abatement (AAA) consulting and shipboard carbon capture and storage.

ESCO is part of Oslo-listed consultancy group ESCO Consultants ASA.

]]>
Energy and marine consultancy ESCO has completed its scope of work as marine warranty surveyor (MWS) to support the successful transport and re-installation of the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) Toscana, off the coast of Livorno, Italy.

ESCO was appointed on this project by OLT Offshore LNG Toscana, the owner of FSRU Toscana.

In mid-April 2024, the FSRU Toscana was successfully towed with the support of two tugs, to the port of Genoa, Italy, where it began the first phase of an ‘extraordinary maintenance intervention’ campaign. The FSRU Toscana was subsequently towed to the port of Marseille, France, where maintenance was completed. The FSRU has recently been towed to its site offshore Livorno, Italy, where it resumed commercial operations at the end of November 2024.

ESCO’s UK operations, headquartered in London, acted as MWS for the de-installation and to support the safe and successful delivery of the marine operations, including the tow-back from Marseille to Livorno, and the subsequent hook-up and pre-commissioning of the FSRU Toscana.

ESCO’s scope of work covered the document review of all project and operational documentation and drawings, suitability surveys of the proposed support fleet, management of risk assessment meetings HAZID and HAZOPs, and on-site attendance to ensure operations were carried out in line with approved documentation. The MWS project management was executed by Rudra Varma, ESCO’s MWS Project Manager.

Sergio Leone

“This was a technically interesting project to work on, due to the tight schedule and also to the complexities of de-installing the significant subsea infrastructure of an FSRU of this calibre. The project matched perfectly ESCO’s expertise and long track-record as marine warranty surveyor, with experience from installation to operations and maintenance, to decommissioning. Furthermore, we have a strong surveyor presence in Italy, which enabled us to provide the most pragmatic and rapid support to on-site attendance.”

Sergio Leone, ESCO MWS Contract Manager for the FSRU Toscana project

ESCO is part of the leading global independent consultancy ESCO Consultants ASA – delivering energy, marine, engineering and digital solutions to drive safety and sustainability in renewables, maritime and oil and gas markets. ESCO Consultants’s extensive global footprint across 43 countries worldwide, includes an office in Genoa, Italy, via the group’s engineering and design branch, MSGlobal Engineering.

Across ESCO Consultants, we provide a comprehensive technical offering to support FSRUs and other floating assets throughout their lifecycle, from initial concept and feasibility through to operations and decommissioning.
