The team at ESCO Consultants shares the passion, vision and values for working in energy and the world’s oceans, de-risking and driving the energy transition. We are driven by the idea that the best work is born from professionalism, diligence… and fun. You know ESCO Consultants, but do you know our team?

What does your day-to-day look like at ESCO?

“My day-to-day activities are quite varied. Some days, I conduct suitability or condition surveys and other marine warranty survey duties, sometimes outside Lagos while other days, I am in the office reviewing engineering documents, writing reports, checking others’ reports for approval, preparing report templates, and contributing to bid preparation.”

What inspired you to join your industry?

From a young age, I have felt a strong sense of responsibility for the safety of life, property, and the environment, particularly in the maritime transportation sector. Watching Titanic as a child sparked my interest, and this led to choose a career in the industry. I wanted to work with a team or company that prioritises safety in the maritime sector, ensuring the enforcement of various maritime conventions and approving procedures that guarantee safe operations, luckily for me I found ESCO.

Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

I recently worked on a thrilling trailered load-out operation of a story living quarters in Port Harcourt. The operation involved moving 610 tons living quarters, using a GO modular transporter, from the land onto a floating barge and it was an amazing experience to witness the complexities of ballast and deballasting, adjusting for tide changes, and managing the off-centre gravity of the structure. Seeing the operation completed on time and on budget was truly exciting.

What does the future look like in energy and oceans in Nigeria?

The future of energy in Nigeria is promising, with continued exploration of oil and gas, new discoveries, and a growing emphasis on offshore development. Oil companies are increasingly focused on developing existing fields, while the government is actively working on tax reforms to improve the investment climate. In addition to offshore oil and gas, renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power are gaining traction, particularly in the northern regions of the country.

What do you enjoy most about working as part of the ESCO Consultants team in Lagos?

What I enjoy most is the strong sense of community and teamwork within the ESCO Consultants team in Lagos. You never feel isolated; there is always a supportive environment, and the team makes you feel special, especially on your birthday. I also enjoy the friendly relationships we have with freelancers, creating a warm and collaborative work atmosphere.

Renewable energy and marine surveyor, Sean Murphy, has recently taken on the pivotal role of Renewables Manager to ESCO in North America, where he will drive the expansion of ESCO’s expert energy and marine consultancy to support clients in the development of the USA’s renewable energy targets.

“2024 is poised to be a big year for US renewable energy, marked by offshore wind leasing processes in New Jersey, Central Atlantic, Oregon, Maryland, Maine and the Gulf of Mexico. With the increasing number of projects in the offshore renewable space, there’s a corresponding rise in challenges from a marine perspective and greater demand on the marine supply chain. At ESCO, we excel in assisting clients in comprehending their marine value chain and mitigating risks at every stage of their projects, thereby ensuring the long-term viability of their assets.”

Sean Murphy, Renewables Manager, ESCO USA

ESCO’s comprehensive offering to the renewable energy sector includes marine advisory services, ports and harbors consultancy, marine assurance & risk services, and marine warranty surveying (MWS). Its US operations are also complemented by sister companies in the market, JMC – the renewable energy consultants, and MSGlobal – the engineering consultants.

“With JMC and MSGlobal, we have a combined track-record across more than 17 US offshore wind projects in various stages of development, as well as experience in floating solar (FPV), wave-energy conversion (WEC), and renewable interconnector projects in the region. Leveraging this wealth of experience, coupled with our established reputation as marine consultants, equips us with an unparalleled understanding of the challenges and opportunities from a marine perspective, from project feasibility to construction to operations.”

John Walker, Managing Director ESCO New York, and Maritime ESCO Americas

In his new capacity, Murphy will work closely with respective colleagues at JMC and MSGlobal, to provide a comprehensive technical offering to support renewable energy stakeholders across the entire development lifecycle of a project or asset.

ESCO USA operates from four primary locations: New York, Boston, Houston and Fort Lauderdale. The local operations are further bolstered by its coast-to-coast marine surveyor footprint, covering Miami, Seattle, San Francisco, New Orleans, Halifax, and St. John’s.

AqualisBraemar LOC group companies in the UK are joining ranks this March to take on the ultimate Thames fitness challenge….Race the Thames 2021!

From the 22nd to 29th March, 6 teams of 8 will each complete the length of the Tidal Thames, 72k, running, jogging, walking, or even cycling.

The event supported by British rower and triple Olympic gold medallist, Andrew Triggs-Hodge, is a fantastic challenge to fulfil those long-forgotten new year’s resolutions, get motivated as a team, whether remotely or socially distanced, but most importantly, to get active in support of two of our chosen causes.

We are pleased to announce that our teams have chosen to complete the challenge in support of two wonderful charities, the London Youth Rowing and The Mission to Seafarers:

LYR is committed to improving the physical, social and mental wellbeing of disadvantaged young people across London, by opening up access to rowing and the many benefits this water sport can offer.

Via rowing, LYR seeks to help young people develop crucial life skills, necessary for success in the classroom and workplace, enable young people to participate in this unique and traditional sport, and nurture a determination and success in a new generation of rowers.

Andy Triggs-Hodge, triple Olympic gold medallist and Great British rower, comments:

“Teamwork makes the dream work – There’s lots of people in need of some team spirit right now, so take part together to bust the winter lockdown, and support the fantastic work LYR do with young people in London”

Day and night, The Mission to Seafarers is on call for seafarers in over 200 ports around the world. With over 90% of world trade carried by sea, providing work to 1.5 million seafarers, we offer much needed practical, emotional and spiritual support through ship-visits, our seafarers’ centres and a range of welfare and emergency support services. All of which is made possible by through our global network of chaplains, staff and volunteers.

The Revd. Canon Andrew Wright, Secretary General of The Mission to Seafarers, comments:

I was excited to hear about the excellent Thames challenge being undertaken by AqualisBraemar LOC. It comes at an important moment in the life of your new company, and also at a critical moment for seafarers. Their work through the pandemic has been heroic, and the challenges they have faced enormous. Our work at The Mission to Seafarers has rarely been more important and your support will play a vital part in our ability to sustain that work. I wish you every success with the challenge. Have fun!”

Please sponsor us as we complete 432km between 48 people, and support these two charities, whose work today is more important than ever, in supporting the physical and mental health of young people and seafarers respectively.

ESCOLOC‘s sister company specialising in engineering and advisory services for marine renewable energies, is participating in COREWIND‘s upcoming virtual information dissemination event:

Innovations in integrated floating offshore wind systems

25th February, 15:00 to 16:30 CET

Webinar Background:

Floating offshore wind is no longer confined to the laboratory: it’s a viable technology ready to be rolled out on an industrial scale. Not only has the technology for floating offshore wind reached maturity, costs are also predicted to plummet with the development of the first commercial projects.

The COREWIND project aims at strengthening European leadership in floating offshore wind energy. To increase the competitiveness of the technology, project partners are working on the optimisation of mooring and anchoring systems as well as dynamic cables, allowing for enhanced performance. A part of the project will focus on testing the recommended innovative designs and optimisation parameters. The resulting recommendations are expected to facilitate the development of floating offshore wind energy, reducing risks and uncertainties, and contributing to lower LCOE (levelised cost of energy).

On 25 February, from 15:00 to 16:30 CET, Corewind partners will meet in an online event to discuss the latest results of the project. Join floating offshore experts from IREC, UPC, Esteyco, Ramboll and others to learn more!

ESCO‘s Project Manager, Valentin Arramounet, will be discussing ESCO’s work with project partner Esteyco, on an optimised mooring system for the ActiveFloat concrete semi-sub floater for the 15MW wind turbine.
